Here are the answers to your most common volunteering questions.


How do I apply to be a volunteer with European Athletics Indoor Championships 2019?

Applications are now closed. We thank you for your interest in and support of the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2019 and wish you every success in your future volunteering.

What is required from a volunteer with the European Athletics indoor Championships 2019?

You must:
Be 18 years of age at point of application

Be able to confidently communicate in English or British Sign Language (although English does not have to be your first language)

Be available between the dates 23 February – 04 March 2019 and complete a minimum of 5 shifts (number of shifts is dependent on the role offered)

Be able to attend all specified training

Be able to make your own way to and from your shifts (no travel or accommodation costs will be covered)

Is there an age limit to volunteer?

You must be 18 years old at point of application (no maximum age)

When are volunteers needed?

Volunteers are required between the 23 February and 04 March 2019, although some roles may be needed before and after these dates. Actual dates will be provided once you have been offered a role

Will Travel or Accommodation expenses be provided / covered?

European Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2019 are unable to cover any travel or accommodation support and you will be required to make your own way to training and volunteer shifts

Do I have to be a UK Citizen to volunteer?

If you are a UK citizen, an EU citizen, are seeking asylum or have the right to remain in the UK then you are eligible to volunteer. If none of these apply, please seek further information from the UK Visas and Immigration department here https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration

Will all information be in English?

Yes, you must be able to confidently communicate in English (speak, read, write) or British Sign Language, although English does not have to be your first language

Will I be guaranteed a role from my top three preferences?

We cannot guarantee any particular role at this stage, however we would like to place you in a role that you will enjoy and will do our best to find a role that suits your interests, skills, experience and availability.

Do I have to have previous volunteering experience?

No. The opportunity is open to anyone who has a passion and enthusiasm for the event

Are there any special requirements / qualifications required?

For driving roles you must have a full UK Driving License with 3 penalty points or less and be over 25 years old.  Apart from that, there are no qualifications required, we just ask that you bring your experience, skills and enthusiasm to the role

When will I hear about the success of my application?

We aim to respond to all applicants before the end of 2018. If your application is successful you will be invited to attend a Skills Match Session in Winter 2018 (December / January). After this we will confirm if we are able to offer you a role with the event

Do I have to attend a Skills Match Session?

Yes, its an opportunity to find out more about the roles available and for us to find out about your skills, interests and experience and will give us the chance to find the best role for you. For those living more than 2 hours travel to Glasgow, we will provide information on options to complete this stage remotely if requried

What training will I be provided?

You will receive training specific to the venue and the role you will undertake. You will be required to undertake training before you can carry out your role to ensure that you have all the information needed to confidently support the event. Training will be provided in person in February 2019

I have volunteered before, do I need to attend the training?

Yes. Training provided will be specific to the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2019

When will I receive confirmation of my shifts?

Information on your shift times/dates will be provided in February

What happens if I cannot make a shift allocated to me?

You must be available for the duration 23 February – 04 March 2019. If you are unable to attend a shift, we may be able to make arrangements with another volunteer to cover so please let us know as soon as possible

What if I have tickets to attend the event when I am expected to volunteer?

That’s great, we are pleased you are looking forward to the event. We ask that you ensure your shift times do not clash with the ticketed session you are attending and if so, let us know as soon as possible. If you do attend the sessions as a spectator it is important that you do not wear your uniform so please ensure to bring a change of clothes if going before / after a shift

As a volunteer will I get discounted or free tickets to the event?

Unfortunately not. Although you won’t be entitled to any special discount, if you are successful in gaining a volunteer position you will have a key role in one of Europe’s largest events as it takes place. A very unique opportunity indeed!

Will travel expenses be provided / covered?

European Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2019 are unable to cover any travel support and you will be required to make your own way to training and volunteer shifts. There will be limited parking available at the venue and this will be filled on a first come, first served basis. All venues are well serviced by public transport and we recommed this form of travel

I am a person with a disability, can I park at the venue?

If you are a blue badge holder there will be designated parking close to the venue. Please let us know if you require this

I am a person with a disability, will I be able to volunteer alongside my Support Worker / Personal Assistant?

Yes. Please let us know that you will be volunteering with your Support Worker / Personal Assistant so we can put the necessary arrangements in place and discuss with you both the best way to support you

I am a person with a disability, what support will you provide?

Please let us know your circumstances and we will do what we can to ensure that you have everything you need to confidently carry out your role
